And just real quick, in case you're behind, we are at 00:00:25.940 --> 00:00:30.440 the very beginning of third Nephi. So many of us know that 00:00:30.500 --> 00:00:35.660 the Savior comes in third Nephi, chapter 11, and Samuel, the 00:00:35.660 --> 00:00:45.520 Lamanite, comes at the very end of Helaman. Oh my goodness. So 00:00:45.520 --> 00:00:48.460 Samuel the Lamanite comes and he says that in five years, Jesus 00:00:48.460 --> 00:00:50.800 is going to be born, right? And then we have all of the signs 00:00:50.800 --> 00:00:53.800 and all of the things, and then the people can't decide what 00:00:53.800 --> 00:00:57.520 they're going to do between the time that the Savior is born and 00:00:57.820 --> 00:01:02.340 the time that He's crucified. They go back and forth and up 00:01:02.340 --> 00:01:05.640 and down and in circles and all over the place. They can't 00:01:05.640 --> 00:01:08.460 decide if they're going to be good or not. But when they are 00:01:08.460 --> 00:01:13.080 good, there are lots of miracles that happen. I know that 00:01:13.080 --> 00:01:15.660 President Nelson has been talking a lot about miracles 00:01:15.660 --> 00:01:19.620 lately, and it seems like a lot of the apostles have been it 00:01:19.620 --> 00:01:24.260 might just be me, which is fine, that happens too, but it just, 00:01:24.260 --> 00:01:27.860 it just feels like there's a lot of buzz in the air about the 00:01:27.860 --> 00:01:33.380 miracles of the last days. I didn't want to take the 00:01:33.380 --> 00:01:37.160 traditional approach and just share a bunch of stories. I 00:01:37.160 --> 00:01:40.780 didn't want to do that because I think we're all aware of that. 00:01:40.840 --> 00:01:47.560 What I wanted to do was take it from the perspective of, how do 00:01:47.560 --> 00:01:53.980 we recognize a miracle? How what are the what are the telltale 00:01:53.980 --> 00:02:00.280 signs of a miracle? I will say, however, that the more I read, 00:02:00.880 --> 00:02:05.940 the more I understood why, when people talk about miracles, they 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:10.620 share their own experiences. And I'll get to that in a little 00:02:10.620 --> 00:02:13.320 bit. Before I get there, I wanted to share some other 00:02:13.320 --> 00:02:16.560 things that I found first. So on the church's website, you may or 00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:18.960 may not be aware, but on the church's website, up in the top 00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:23.000 navigation, if you click on Libraries, there's a section 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:27.740 there called topics and questions. And within the topics 00:02:27.740 --> 00:02:31.940 and questions, there's a section on miracles. And I'm going to 00:02:31.940 --> 00:02:36.440 start with a few things that I found there. It says miracles 00:02:36.440 --> 00:02:40.240 represent moments when God works with his power on behalf of his 00:02:40.240 --> 00:02:45.160 children, that's pretty simply put. So God uses his power on 00:02:45.160 --> 00:02:49.540 our behalf, and that, to me, that tells us how a miracle 00:02:49.540 --> 00:02:54.580 works, but it doesn't tell us how to recognize one, at least 00:02:55.120 --> 00:03:04.380 not super obviously, you know me by now, maybe, hopefully, I am a 00:03:04.380 --> 00:03:10.020 logical pragmatist. So when I read that, when I read miracles, 00:03:10.020 --> 00:03:13.080 represent moments when God works with his power on behalf of his 00:03:13.080 --> 00:03:18.600 children, my brain changed it to when God uses his power to do 00:03:18.600 --> 00:03:25.100 something for me that's a miracle. Later on on that page, 00:03:25.100 --> 00:03:30.860 there's a quote from elder Ronald A Rasband, and he said, 00:03:31.340 --> 00:03:35.540 The Lord performs miracles to remind us of His power, His love 00:03:35.540 --> 00:03:38.720 for us, his reach from the heavens to our mortal 00:03:38.720 --> 00:03:43.540 experience, and his desire to teach of that which is of most 00:03:43.540 --> 00:03:50.500 worth. Now, again, the logical pragmatist in my brain heard God 00:03:50.500 --> 00:03:55.060 uses miracles to remind me that he's there, that he's aware of 00:03:55.060 --> 00:03:59.500 me, my specific circumstances, no matter how insignificant I 00:03:59.500 --> 00:04:03.600 may feel. I'm going to switch that just a little bit and say 00:04:03.600 --> 00:04:08.640 God uses miracles to remind us that he's there, that he is 00:04:08.640 --> 00:04:12.780 aware of us and our specific circumstances, no matter how 00:04:12.780 --> 00:04:17.820 insignificant we may feel later on. There's another quote from 00:04:17.820 --> 00:04:20.960 elder Rasband. He said, many of you have witnessed miracles more 00:04:20.960 --> 00:04:24.740 than you realize, they may seem small in comparison to Jesus 00:04:24.740 --> 00:04:30.080 raising the dead, but the magnitude does not distinguish a 00:04:30.080 --> 00:04:36.200 miracle only that it came from God. Not all miracles are big. 00:04:36.560 --> 00:04:41.920 Some are tiny, but size does not a miracle make. Here's another 00:04:41.920 --> 00:04:45.820 nugget from that same page. Some miracles take place quietly, 00:04:45.820 --> 00:04:49.180 such as when a person gains a testimony of God's truth, that's 00:04:49.180 --> 00:04:54.880 a miracle, experiences a mighty change of heart, obtains 00:04:54.880 --> 00:04:58.900 forgiveness from the Lord, or is blessed with peace and strength 00:04:58.960 --> 00:05:03.240 during a difficult. Time, those are seemingly small and 00:05:03.240 --> 00:05:09.720 significant experiences. Do we all consider them a miracle? I 00:05:09.720 --> 00:05:15.840 do now, and now I'm going to ask another rhetorical question, are 00:05:15.840 --> 00:05:19.980 we looking for miracles in all the wrong places? Those of us 00:05:19.980 --> 00:05:22.400 who don't think we witness them? Are we just not seeing them 00:05:22.400 --> 00:05:25.460 because we're looking for big things when really the miracles 00:05:25.460 --> 00:05:32.900 in our lives are smaller things? Are we expecting angelic choirs 00:05:32.900 --> 00:05:38.780 with trumpets to announce the arrival of a miracle? What are 00:05:38.780 --> 00:05:42.280 we expecting? What are we looking for? I found another 00:05:42.280 --> 00:05:49.720 really good source for info for this episode in 2001 then Elder 00:05:49.780 --> 00:05:54.640 Dallin H oaks. He gave a talk at a church educational system 00:05:54.640 --> 00:06:00.480 fireside in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, titled miracles. He 00:06:00.480 --> 00:06:02.760 gives us a pretty good definition. He talks about 00:06:02.760 --> 00:06:06.360 different types of miracles, but he gives us kind of an overall 00:06:07.020 --> 00:06:10.920 umbrella definition of what a miracle is. He said a miracle 00:06:11.160 --> 00:06:15.240 has been defined as a beneficial event brought about through 00:06:15.240 --> 00:06:18.960 divine power that mortals do not understand and of themselves 00:06:18.960 --> 00:06:23.000 cannot duplicate. So there's three things. There are three 00:06:24.200 --> 00:06:27.020 qualifications, if you will, within that definition for 00:06:27.020 --> 00:06:30.020 something to be considered a miracle. Number one, it's 00:06:30.020 --> 00:06:33.980 brought about by divine power. Number two, mortals do not 00:06:33.980 --> 00:06:39.440 understand. And number three, mortals cannot duplicate. And I 00:06:39.440 --> 00:06:42.940 have to share this quote from this, this talk, because it's so 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:46.360 it's just, it's classic President oaks, he said the word 00:06:46.360 --> 00:06:48.940 miracle is used in different ways. We sometimes say that 00:06:48.940 --> 00:06:53.920 anything happening we cannot explain is a miracle. To me, a 00:06:53.920 --> 00:06:57.340 computer is a miracle. So our cell phones and space travel. 00:06:57.700 --> 00:07:00.660 But these wonders are explainable by physical laws and 00:07:00.660 --> 00:07:04.200 understood by some mortals. I call them miracles because I do 00:07:04.200 --> 00:07:07.200 not personally understand them and therefore cannot duplicate 00:07:07.200 --> 00:07:12.900 them at will. Super classic President oaks, right? Like you 00:07:12.900 --> 00:07:17.160 guys probably know how this works. He's an incredibly smart 00:07:17.160 --> 00:07:21.320 man. He's an attorney like he's he's an incredibly smart person, 00:07:22.580 --> 00:07:26.180 and he's just like to me a computer and a cell phone, those 00:07:26.180 --> 00:07:29.000 are miracles because I don't understand how they work. I 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:32.420 can't make them work. I can't duplicate them. To me, that is a 00:07:32.420 --> 00:07:37.040 miracle. I just I had to share it because it was so classic 00:07:37.040 --> 00:07:41.320 President oaks. But a little bit later on in the talk, he says, I 00:07:41.320 --> 00:07:45.520 will now describe two types of genuine miracles. These two fit 00:07:45.520 --> 00:07:48.220 all of the elements of the definition. They are brought 00:07:48.220 --> 00:07:51.400 about by divine power. Mortals do not understand them, and 00:07:51.400 --> 00:07:55.000 mortals cannot duplicate them of themselves. And then the two 00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:57.460 types of miracles that he lists are miracles brought about by 00:07:57.460 --> 00:08:01.140 the priesthood and miracles worked through the power of 00:08:01.140 --> 00:08:03.840 faith without specifically invoking the power of the 00:08:03.840 --> 00:08:09.540 priesthood. He talks about macro 00:09:19.860 --> 00:09:23.720 miracles and micro miracles, and this is when I started to 00:09:23.720 --> 00:09:28.520 understand why people share, why people share the stories of the 00:09:28.520 --> 00:09:31.280 miracles that have happened in their own lives, to try and 00:09:31.280 --> 00:09:36.860 explain how to see them in your own macro miracles are ones that 00:09:36.860 --> 00:09:42.400 affect lots of people. So he gives two, I think he gives 00:09:42.400 --> 00:09:45.340 three examples. I'm going to share. Oh, I'm going to share 00:09:45.340 --> 00:09:49.540 all three. Jesus's triumph over physical and spiritual death was 00:09:49.540 --> 00:09:54.340 number one. So the Atonement is a miracle. The second one is 00:09:55.780 --> 00:10:00.420 the willingness of the youth, the young adults who. Their 00:10:00.960 --> 00:10:05.520 1819, year olds, the their willingness to put their 00:10:05.520 --> 00:10:09.780 education, their sports, their whatever they have going on in 00:10:09.780 --> 00:10:12.120 their lives, to put that aside for a year and a half to two 00:10:12.120 --> 00:10:15.000 years, to go serve a mission and share the gospel with others. 00:10:15.540 --> 00:10:20.180 That is a miracle. And then the third one. Now remember this 00:10:20.180 --> 00:10:24.920 quote or this this talk was from 2001 and the third one that he 00:10:24.920 --> 00:10:28.640 talks about is the amount of genealogy that was done in just 00:10:28.640 --> 00:10:33.680 the first year that Family Search had launched. He gives 00:10:33.980 --> 00:10:39.620 some really interesting statistics on missionary, I hate 00:10:39.620 --> 00:10:42.940 to say this, missionary fatalities. He gives some really 00:10:42.940 --> 00:10:46.960 interesting statistics on that, and he gives some interesting 00:10:46.960 --> 00:10:52.060 stats on on Family Search and what happened during its first 00:10:52.060 --> 00:10:54.880 year. You should definitely go check those out. It's worth 00:10:54.880 --> 00:10:59.020 going back to read. So that's macro miracles. Macro miracles, 00:10:59.980 --> 00:11:06.300 lots of lots and lots of people the second so micro miracles are 00:11:06.300 --> 00:11:10.440 the kinds that impact only a few people. And he quotes President 00:11:10.440 --> 00:11:14.220 Kimball and says, what kinds of miracles do we have? All kinds, 00:11:15.600 --> 00:11:20.160 excuse me, Revelations, visions, tongues, healings, special 00:11:20.160 --> 00:11:23.480 guidance and directions evil spirits cast out. Where are 00:11:23.480 --> 00:11:26.660 they? Recorded in the records of the church, in journals, in news 00:11:26.660 --> 00:11:29.480 and magazine articles and in the minds and memories of many 00:11:29.480 --> 00:11:32.240 people. So he was quoting President Kimball from the late 00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:39.980 80s when he said that late 80s, early 80s. Okay, micro, macro 00:11:39.980 --> 00:11:42.880 miracles, lots of people, micro miracles, just a few people, 00:11:42.880 --> 00:11:48.280 maybe only one. Now, I don't know if you're seeing what I'm 00:11:48.280 --> 00:11:52.960 seeing, but as I, as I said before, as I start, as I've been 00:11:52.960 --> 00:11:55.000 going through all of these things, I'm starting to 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:59.140 understand why people share examples of miracles to help 00:11:59.140 --> 00:12:08.820 teach us how to see them. When we share a story that the Savior 00:12:08.820 --> 00:12:12.360 taught in parables stories, right, when the stories are 00:12:12.360 --> 00:12:18.180 shared, we get the message that we need for ourselves. So when 00:12:18.180 --> 00:12:23.000 people are sharing examples of miracles, they are pointing out 00:12:23.060 --> 00:12:26.660 something that potentially has happened in your life that you 00:12:26.660 --> 00:12:32.840 can now recognize as a miracle. Duh, because we're all 00:12:32.840 --> 00:12:35.540 different. That means all of our miracles are different too. It's 00:12:35.600 --> 00:12:38.660 like how we talked about a few episodes back about how the 00:12:38.660 --> 00:12:41.440 spirit talks to us. The Spirit talks to us in different ways. 00:12:42.100 --> 00:12:44.140 Our miracles are going to be different. And that actually makes 00:13:23.540 --> 00:13:30.620 me think of elder Holland, and we have in Relief Society coming 00:13:30.620 --> 00:13:37.700 up. We're using elder Holland's talk, the one from the most 00:13:37.700 --> 00:13:41.620 recent conference. And now I can't remember. My brain is just 00:13:41.620 --> 00:13:47.920 not working today, apparently. But elder Holland is talking 00:13:47.920 --> 00:13:52.000 about how his prayers for the life of his wife were not 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:55.540 answered in the way that he hoped. Right? President oaks, 00:13:55.600 --> 00:13:58.780 most of us have offered prayers that were not answered with the 00:13:58.780 --> 00:14:02.700 miracles we requested at the time we desired miracles are not 00:14:02.700 --> 00:14:07.140 available for the asking. We know this from the Lord's 00:14:07.140 --> 00:14:09.720 revelation directing that the elders should be called to lay 00:14:09.720 --> 00:14:12.300 hands on and bless the sick. And then he quotes Doctrine and 00:14:12.300 --> 00:14:16.800 Covenants. Section 42 verse 48 he says, It shall come to pass 00:14:16.800 --> 00:14:20.420 that he that hath faith in me to be healed and is not appointed 00:14:20.420 --> 00:14:27.260 unto death shall be healed. He continues the will of the Lord 00:14:27.260 --> 00:14:30.680 is always paramount. The priesthood of the Lord cannot be 00:14:30.680 --> 00:14:35.720 used to work a miracle contrary to the will of the Lord. We must 00:14:35.720 --> 00:14:39.500 also remember that even when a miracle is to occur, it will not 00:14:39.500 --> 00:14:43.720 occur in our desired schedule, the revelations teach that 00:14:43.720 --> 00:14:48.820 miraculous experiences occur in his own time and in his own way. 00:14:50.320 --> 00:14:53.980 The Lord uses his power for the benefit of his children in his 00:14:53.980 --> 00:15:00.480 time and in his way to provide miracles for us. A. And then 00:15:00.480 --> 00:15:03.960 President oaks counsels us. This is when the whole sharing thing 00:15:03.960 --> 00:15:07.080 comes in. He counsels us about when to share and when not to 00:15:07.080 --> 00:15:11.640 share our own miracles. He says, Why don't our talks in general 00:15:11.640 --> 00:15:14.400 conference and local meetings say more about the miracles we 00:15:14.400 --> 00:15:19.080 have seen? Most of the miracles we experience are not to be 00:15:19.080 --> 00:15:22.820 shared consistent with the teachings of the scriptures, we 00:15:22.820 --> 00:15:26.720 hold them sacred and share them only when the Spirit prompts us 00:15:26.720 --> 00:15:30.860 to do so. And I'm not going to read them here, but he he quotes 00:15:30.860 --> 00:15:33.980 four different scriptures, and you should definitely go look 00:15:33.980 --> 00:15:37.880 those up. He warns that us sharing our miracles at the at 00:15:37.880 --> 00:15:41.140 the wrong time could be a very bad thing, and this is what he 00:15:41.140 --> 00:15:44.680 says, it is usually inappropriate to recite 00:15:44.680 --> 00:15:48.220 miraculous circumstances to a general audience, that includes 00:15:48.220 --> 00:15:51.820 people with very different levels of spiritual maturity. To 00:15:51.820 --> 00:15:55.060 a general audience, miracles will be faith reinforcing for 00:15:55.060 --> 00:16:00.960 some, but an inappropriate sign for others. He talks about 00:16:00.960 --> 00:16:03.240 earlier, earlier in this talk, he talks about what 00:16:03.240 --> 00:16:09.840 inappropriate signs are, and he talks like he talks about fake 00:16:09.840 --> 00:16:15.420 miracles and the adversaries counterfeit for a true miracle 00:16:15.420 --> 00:16:18.840 that comes from our Heavenly Father. And so when you put that 00:16:18.840 --> 00:16:22.580 together with sharing our miracles, we have to be careful, 00:16:22.580 --> 00:16:27.440 because while they may be while us sharing our miracle may be 00:16:27.440 --> 00:16:31.220 faith promoting for some people, it may be an inappropriate sign 00:16:31.220 --> 00:16:36.980 for other people. Please go back and read it, because it also 00:16:36.980 --> 00:16:41.860 talks about it also goes into a really good explanation about 00:16:41.860 --> 00:16:46.840 the difference between seeking miracles and asking for a sign. 00:16:48.580 --> 00:16:52.300 And I don't know that I had ever put those two together, but it 00:16:52.360 --> 00:16:56.860 makes sense. Are we looking for miracles, and why are we looking 00:16:56.860 --> 00:16:59.380 for why are we looking for miracles? Are we looking for 00:16:59.380 --> 00:17:05.580 miracles as faith promoting and faith reinforcing, or are we 00:17:05.580 --> 00:17:13.080 looking for miracles as a faith starter? And I think I think 00:17:13.080 --> 00:17:17.160 back to like Layman and Lemuel. How many angels did those guys 00:17:17.160 --> 00:17:22.940 see? And they still didn't get it. They still wouldn't listen 00:17:25.400 --> 00:17:31.100 and so. But then Mary Magdalene, waiting outside or going to the 00:17:31.100 --> 00:17:43.420 tomb of the Savior, sees him. She in my own brain, that is and 00:17:43.420 --> 00:17:47.560 I think of corihor too, like asking for a sign, and what 00:17:47.560 --> 00:17:52.360 happens when we ask for a sign and versus what happens when we 00:17:52.360 --> 00:17:55.480 are seeking miracles, what happens when we are looking for 00:17:55.480 --> 00:17:59.680 something to give us faith, versus looking for something to 00:17:59.740 --> 00:18:04.140 reinforce the faith that we already have. And elder pres 00:18:04.140 --> 00:18:07.320 elder then elder President oaks goes into a much better 00:18:07.320 --> 00:18:12.300 explanation of that. Please, please, please, go read it. Also 00:18:12.300 --> 00:18:16.980 in this talk, he shares a ton of stories, of miracles, some from 00:18:16.980 --> 00:18:20.900 his own life, some that have been recorded. So even though, 00:18:20.900 --> 00:18:24.980 like he's counseled us to be to be careful, to not share our 00:18:24.980 --> 00:18:29.720 miracles, unless, and this is what he says, although we are 00:18:29.720 --> 00:18:32.840 generally counseled not to speak of sacred things like the 00:18:32.840 --> 00:18:35.840 miracles we have witnessed, there are times when the Spirit 00:18:35.840 --> 00:18:39.140 prompts us to share these experiences, sometimes even in a 00:18:39.140 --> 00:18:43.480 setting where where our account will be published, the miracles 00:18:43.480 --> 00:18:46.360 written in the Scriptures were obviously intended to be shared, 00:18:46.540 --> 00:18:49.540 usually to strengthen the faith of those who already believed. 00:18:49.960 --> 00:18:53.440 Modern servants of the Lord have also felt impressed to describe 00:18:53.440 --> 00:18:57.700 miraculous events to strengthen the faith of believers. Many of 00:18:57.700 --> 00:19:01.500 these have been published, and then after, he says that he 00:19:01.500 --> 00:19:04.620 shares a whole bunch of different miracles, and they're 00:19:04.620 --> 00:19:07.680 really cool.
