I don't know 00:00:22.340 --> 00:00:26.120 that there is such a thing. I have not mastered it. I have 00:00:26.120 --> 00:00:30.860 long, long ways to go, and today I'm actually coming at this from 00:00:30.860 --> 00:00:34.700 the opposite perspective. I had a recent experience that I'm not 00:00:34.700 --> 00:00:38.600 quite ready to share. That was kind of a warning sign for me. 00:00:40.820 --> 00:00:45.160 Have you ever had those little warning signs, little warning 00:00:45.160 --> 00:00:47.860 experiences, if you will, that kind of tell you that you need 00:00:47.860 --> 00:00:54.100 to make a change. So my last episode was about repentance, 00:00:54.100 --> 00:00:57.820 and as I was studying for that episode, I started to see some 00:00:57.820 --> 00:01:03.360 little things that I could improve upon some seemingly 00:01:03.360 --> 00:01:06.960 small things, some course corrections that I can make. And 00:01:06.960 --> 00:01:09.960 when I started thinking about all of those little things, this 00:01:09.960 --> 00:01:16.080 scripture popped into my head, or rather sort of a scripture 00:01:16.080 --> 00:01:22.460 story you may remember in the Book of Mormon, Alma, chapter 32 00:01:23.300 --> 00:01:29.840 it's most famous for its explanation of faith and its 00:01:29.840 --> 00:01:34.820 comparison of faith to a seed, but this actually is before 00:01:34.820 --> 00:01:39.200 that. So Alma and Amulek have teamed up, and they are 00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:43.000 preaching throughout the land and in Alma 32 Alma is actually 00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:50.140 talking to a very, a very poor class of people. They weren't 00:01:50.140 --> 00:01:52.360 allowed in the synagogues because they didn't have clothes 00:01:52.360 --> 00:01:57.400 nice enough for them to go into the synagogue. And Alma was 00:01:57.400 --> 00:02:04.080 talking to them. And he says in verse 13, he says, And now, 00:02:04.080 --> 00:02:08.880 because ye are compelled to be humble, Blessed are ye? For a 00:02:08.880 --> 00:02:12.120 man, sometimes, if he is compelled to be humble, seeketh 00:02:12.120 --> 00:02:16.860 repentance. And then verse 14, and now, as I said unto you, 00:02:17.100 --> 00:02:20.400 That because ye were compelled to be humble, ye were blessed. 00:02:20.640 --> 00:02:25.100 Do you not suppose that they are more blessed who truly humble 00:02:25.100 --> 00:02:30.320 themselves because of the word and then verse 15 yea, he that 00:02:30.320 --> 00:02:34.280 truly humbleth himself and repenteth of his sins and 00:02:34.280 --> 00:02:38.240 endureth to the end, the same shall be blessed. So in these verses, specifically in 00:02:53.140 --> 00:02:57.100 verse 15, Alma is talking more specifically about being 00:02:57.580 --> 00:03:04.140 compelled to be humble through poverty, but he's talking about 00:03:04.140 --> 00:03:06.840 that because those were the specific circumstances to those 00:03:06.840 --> 00:03:11.220 people. But didn't we just last week or the week before, talk 00:03:11.220 --> 00:03:15.480 about the pride cycle? Pretty sure that was our Sunday school 00:03:15.480 --> 00:03:20.480 lesson two weeks ago, talked about the pride cycle as part of 00:03:20.480 --> 00:03:26.000 our Come follow me studies, and when you put the concept of the 00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:32.120 pride cycle in the context of these verses, do you want to be 00:03:32.120 --> 00:03:36.140 compelled to be humble? It's usually pretty significant. Our 00:03:36.140 --> 00:03:38.960 examples in the book in the Book of Mormon, are pretty 00:03:38.960 --> 00:03:44.380 significant for when the people need to be humbled so for 00:03:44.380 --> 00:03:48.940 myself, I remember these verses sticking out to me once a really 00:03:48.940 --> 00:03:54.580 long time ago, I was maybe a teenager, maybe early 20s, and I 00:03:54.580 --> 00:03:59.920 remember thinking and pleading that I would be able to 00:03:59.920 --> 00:04:02.520 recognize when I needed to humble myself so that I didn't 00:04:02.520 --> 00:04:05.340 have to be compelled to be humble, because it kind of 00:04:05.340 --> 00:04:10.560 frightens me a little bit to be compelled to be humble. So 00:04:11.280 --> 00:04:15.000 heavenly Father will send me these little warning experiences 00:04:15.300 --> 00:04:19.740 to help me realize that I need to humble myself before I have 00:04:19.740 --> 00:04:25.400 to be compelled. And this time, the warning signs came in a few 00:04:25.400 --> 00:04:29.720 different ways. So first, it was kind of that brain explosion 00:04:29.720 --> 00:04:33.620 that I had with my last episode. The last episode we talked about 00:04:33.620 --> 00:04:42.220 repentance, and the fact that daily repentance is really just 00:04:42.220 --> 00:04:47.380 trying to be a little bit better each day. And then a friend said 00:04:47.380 --> 00:04:50.380 something to me the other day that made me stop for us for a 00:04:50.380 --> 00:04:54.160 second and question my motives on something that I was trying 00:04:54.160 --> 00:04:58.120 to accomplish, and this thing that I'm trying to accomplish, 00:04:58.180 --> 00:05:03.720 it's great. And the. Tensions are good, but my motives needed 00:05:03.720 --> 00:05:06.960 to be refocused. I needed to refocus my motives so that I 00:05:06.960 --> 00:05:11.820 could plan this thing for the right reasons. And then 00:05:11.820 --> 00:05:15.780 yesterday, I was talking to this lady at church. I don't talk to 00:05:15.780 --> 00:05:21.260 her very often. We both have twins. Hers are hers are 00:05:21.920 --> 00:05:26.420 probably close to my age, and mine are five, but every once in 00:05:26.420 --> 00:05:28.640 a while, she'll see my twins do something, and she'll kind of 00:05:28.640 --> 00:05:31.400 chuckle, and we'll talk for a little bit, and that's what 00:05:31.580 --> 00:05:36.440 started the conversation at church yesterday. And then she 00:05:36.440 --> 00:05:39.560 said something that was really far off topic and kind of 00:05:39.560 --> 00:05:44.680 random, and she even followed it up with something like, I'm not 00:05:44.680 --> 00:05:48.940 even sure why I just told you that just follow the spirit. And 00:05:48.940 --> 00:05:53.920 then she just kind of laughed and walked away. And she might 00:05:53.920 --> 00:05:57.220 not know. She may not have known why she said that to me, but I 00:05:57.220 --> 00:05:59.920 knew, and I knew that my Heavenly Father was sending me a 00:05:59.920 --> 00:06:05.280 message. So those are three warning signs, and they were all 00:06:05.280 --> 00:06:10.680 pointed at three different things that are all happening in 00:06:10.680 --> 00:06:18.060 my life at the same time. And they all could have very easily 00:06:18.060 --> 00:06:24.560 have been missed, but they were all, this is the way that the 00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:27.140 Spirit speaks to me, and this is the way that my Heavenly Father 00:06:27.140 --> 00:06:33.560 sends me messages. And so I did not miss them. I picked up on 00:06:33.560 --> 00:06:36.260 them, and knew that my Heavenly Father was mourning me, that I 00:06:36.260 --> 00:06:39.620 was getting a little too full of myself, and it was time to 00:06:39.620 --> 00:06:44.140 recenter and adjust. So now I'm going to share with you what I 00:06:44.140 --> 00:06:52.480 found when I started looking for ways to not ways, when I started 00:06:52.480 --> 00:06:58.900 looking for things to focus on, things to think about, things to 00:06:58.900 --> 00:07:05.220 do, to try and humble myself. And elder Redland Dale G Renlund 00:07:05.220 --> 00:07:11.520 gave a talk in october 2020, called do justly love mercy and 00:07:11.520 --> 00:07:15.780 walk humbly with God. So let's take those three things, one at 00:07:15.780 --> 00:07:19.560 a time. Do justly love mercy, walk humbly with God. The first 00:07:19.560 --> 00:07:24.380 one do justly, he said, a just person turns away from sin and 00:07:24.380 --> 00:07:29.480 toward God, makes covenants with him and keeps those covenants. A 00:07:29.480 --> 00:07:33.380 just person chooses to obey the commandments of God, repents 00:07:33.380 --> 00:07:37.820 when falling short, and keeps on trying. Those all describe 00:07:37.820 --> 00:07:43.060 somebody who is humble, somebody with humility. Later, he says to 00:07:43.060 --> 00:07:47.260 be Christ, like a person does justly, behaving honorably with 00:07:47.320 --> 00:07:52.000 both God and other people, a just person is civil in words 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:55.960 and action and recognizes that differences in Outlook or belief 00:07:56.320 --> 00:08:01.620 do not preclude genuine kindness and friendship. Individuals who 00:08:01.620 --> 00:08:06.600 do justly will not have a mind to injure on another, but to 00:08:06.600 --> 00:08:11.820 live peaceably, one with another. So in short, to do 00:08:11.820 --> 00:08:16.440 justly is to show kindness and civility toward others, to be a 00:08:16.440 --> 00:08:22.160 peacemaker. Next was love mercy. So to me, that seemed pretty 00:08:22.160 --> 00:08:25.520 self explanatory, but I read it anyway, and here's what he said, 00:08:26.420 --> 00:08:29.840 to be Christ, like a person loves mercy, people who love 00:08:29.840 --> 00:08:34.040 mercy are not judgmental. They manifest compassion for others, 00:08:34.100 --> 00:08:36.920 especially for those who are less fortunate. They are 00:08:36.920 --> 00:08:40.960 gracious, kind and honorable. These individuals treat everyone 00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:44.200 with love and understanding, regardless of characteristics 00:08:44.440 --> 00:08:48.940 such as race, gender, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, 00:08:49.180 --> 00:08:53.620 socioeconomic status and tribal clan or national differences, 00:08:53.980 --> 00:08:59.920 these are superseded by Christ like love. Christ like love 00:08:59.920 --> 00:09:06.900 supersedes everything to someone who loves mercy. So to me, a 00:09:06.900 --> 00:09:10.560 person who loves mercy is compassionate and loving. They 00:09:10.560 --> 00:09:14.460 try to be quick to forgive and not judge others when it's not 00:09:14.460 --> 00:09:19.680 their place to do so. Okay, lastly, the third thing, walk 00:09:19.680 --> 00:09:26.000 humbly with God, he said. And I don't know about you, but walk 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:29.720 humbly with God. Made me think of the footprints poem and the 00:09:29.720 --> 00:09:33.080 picture that always comes with it, and like the two sets of 00:09:33.080 --> 00:09:35.540 footprints on the beach, and then all of a sudden, just one 00:09:35.540 --> 00:09:38.840 step, one set of footsteps on the beach, to walk humbly with 00:09:38.840 --> 00:09:44.620 God. Anyway, just a funny little thing in my brain. Back to 00:09:44.860 --> 00:09:49.060 Renlund, he said, to be Christ, like a person, chooses God, 00:09:49.300 --> 00:09:53.560 walks humbly with him, seeks to please Him, and keeps covenants 00:09:53.560 --> 00:09:57.220 with him. Individuals who walk humbly with God Remember what 00:09:57.220 --> 00:10:00.900 Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have done for them. Okay, so 00:10:00.900 --> 00:10:06.180 please note that he says, walks humbly with God, not humbly 00:10:06.180 --> 00:10:07.260 follows him. 00:10:08.580 --> 00:10:11.640 And I think that that's significant. Think about the 00:10:11.640 --> 00:10:16.020 difference someone who follows isn't necessarily having a 00:10:16.020 --> 00:10:23.180 conversation, but someone who walks with their there. There's 00:10:23.180 --> 00:10:25.520 usually some sort of conversation happening. There's 00:10:25.940 --> 00:10:31.400 learning or teaching or sharing. There's usually something going 00:10:31.400 --> 00:10:34.340 on when you are walking with someone versus following behind 00:10:34.340 --> 00:10:40.100 them. All of this another tall order, right? We just keep 00:10:40.100 --> 00:10:43.360 adding to this never ending list of things that we need to work 00:10:43.360 --> 00:10:47.500 on, the kinds of people that we need to be. But elder Renlund 00:10:47.500 --> 00:10:50.440 said this too. He said at the same time, our Heavenly Father 00:10:50.440 --> 00:10:54.700 and Jesus Christ do not want us to be paralyzed by continual 00:10:54.700 --> 00:10:57.880 uncertainty during our mortal journey, wondering whether we 00:10:57.880 --> 00:11:01.500 have done enough to be saved and exalted. They surely do not want 00:11:01.500 --> 00:11:04.920 us to be tormented by mistakes from which we have repented, 00:11:05.280 --> 00:11:08.940 thinking of them as wounds that never heal, or to be excessively 00:11:08.940 --> 00:11:13.260 apprehensive that we might stumble again. That defeats the 00:11:13.260 --> 00:11:18.300 purpose. Those are the things that Satan wants us to think and 00:11:18.300 --> 00:11:21.560 that's where daily repentance comes into play. So Renly even 00:11:21.560 --> 00:11:25.520 told us how that we how we can assess our own progress. We can 00:11:25.520 --> 00:11:27.980 know that the course of life that we are pursuing and 00:11:27.980 --> 00:11:32.120 according is according to God's will. When we do justly love 00:11:32.120 --> 00:11:35.600 mercy and walk humbly with our God, we assimilate the 00:11:35.600 --> 00:11:38.240 attributes of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ into our 00:11:38.240 --> 00:11:41.920 character, and we love one another when we do these things, 00:11:42.460 --> 00:11:46.480 you will follow the covenant path and qualify to dwell with 00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:50.380 God in a state of never ending happiness. Your souls will be 00:11:50.380 --> 00:11:53.620 infused with the glory of God and with the light of 00:11:53.620 --> 00:11:57.640 everlasting life. You will be filled with incomprehensible 00:11:57.640 --> 00:12:03.540 joy. I've used this chapter many 00:12:25.040 --> 00:12:31.040 times to do some of my own personal self reflection. Some 00:12:31.040 --> 00:12:35.060 of the questions are really rough to get through. Some of 00:12:35.060 --> 00:12:39.140 them are more difficult than others, but it's worth it. 00:12:40.460 --> 00:12:44.080 Please remember that there is always hope. When you go through 00:12:44.080 --> 00:12:46.660 chapter five and you're like, oh my gosh, these are tough. 00:12:47.080 --> 00:12:50.020 There's always hope, because there is always repentance, 00:12:50.020 --> 00:12:53.620 there's always just a little bit more tomorrow and a little bit 00:12:53.620 --> 00:12:57.340 more the next day. We we just have to do our best.
